Il Museo del Mare di Genova é il più grande dell’area del mar Mediterraneo fra quelli dedicati a questo argomento, e anche uno dei più moderni d’Italia. Inaugurato nel 2004, in occasione di Genova capitale europea della cultura 2004, il museo sorge nel Palazzo Galata, la cui ristrutturazione è stata studiata dall’architetto spagnolo Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra. Galata è uno storico quartiere di Istanbul, e, fino al XV secolo, sede di una delle più importanti comunità genovesi nel Mediterraneo. Perciò alla fine dell’Ottocento, quando il Comune di Genova costruì un quartiere di docks commerciali, al più antico di questi venne dato il nome dell’antica colonia. Nell’Ottocento, “il Galata” aveva già una storia lunga quasi tre secoli: nella sua parte inferiore, infatti, venivano costruite le galee della Repubblica di Genova e l’edificio faceva parte dell’Arsenale, il complesso militare e marittimo più importante della città.
The Maritime Museum in Genoa is the largest of the Mediterranean Sea area between those dedicated to this subject and one of the most modern in Italy. Opened in 2004, on the occasion of Genoa European Capital of Culture 2004, the museum is located in the Galata Palace, whose renovation has been designed by the Spanish architect Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra. Galata Is an historic district of Istanbul, and, until the fifteenth century, home to one of the most important Genoese community in the Mediterranean. So at the end of the nineteenth century, when the city of Genoa built a district of commercial docks, to the oldest of these was given the name of the ancient colony. In the nineteenth century, “Galata” already has a long history of nearly three centuries: in its lower part, in fact, were built galleys of Genoa Republic and the building was part of the Arsenal, the most important military and maritime complex of the city.
