The creche of Rebibbia women’s section
Under the law, children from 0 to 6 years old can be detained in prison with their mothers. The Nido section in the Rebibbia Female Prison is a model structure, thanks to the efforts of the association founded by Leda Colombini. During the day cells are open to form a small community with cooking and childcare, there is a colorful playroom, a space for medical examination and a beautiful garden. But it’s still a prison, there are bars on the windows, and you’re surrounded by walls and security doors. Jasmina, Elizabeth, Zorka, Lepa, Valentina, Violeta, Jessica, Zagorka and their children who have famous names such as Al Capone, Elvis or Shakira, are of Roma ethnicity. It also happens that there are Italian women convicted of heavy crimes, which do not allow house arrest. In the case of detained rom the problem is that the fields in which they live are not considered a home.
