I primi indiani sono arrivati nell’Agro Pontino negli anni ’80, prevalentemente dal Punjab e sono ferventi Sikh. In questo ultimo decennio sono diventati i braccianti della pianura pontina sostituendosi quasi completamente all’ondata migratoria precedente rappresentata dai lavoratori dell’Est Europa. La loro giornata lavorativa inizia alle 5.30 del mattino. Si lavora dalle 13 alle 14 ore, con una sola ora per la pausa pranzo. Le paghe sono da fame: dai 2.50 ai 3.50 euro l’ora, ma anche meno quando si registrano fenomeni di caporalato. In prevalenza si tratta di braccianti impiegati in nero. La terra è tanto fertile, ma soffre della crisi economica generale e della penetrazione della criminalità organizzata, che è capillare: estorsioni, controllo dell’edilizia e dell’agroalimentare.
The first Indians arrived in the Agro Pontino in the 80′s, mainly from Punjab and are fervent Sikhs. In the last decade they have become the farm labourers of the Pontine plain, almost completely replacing the previous wave of migration represented by workers from Eastern Europe. Their working day starts at 5.30 am. You work from 13 to 14 hours, with only one hour for lunch break. Pay is starving: from 2.50 to 3.50 euros per hour, but also less when caporalate phenomena occur. Most of them are farm labourers working in black. The land is so fertile, but it suffers from the general economic crisis and the penetration of organised crime, which is widespread: extortion, control of the building industry and the agri-food industry.
